Homework Policy

Homework Policy 

  • Homework folders come to school and return home every day.

  • Homework is checked for completion on Wednesdays.  This is to give students time over the weekends to complete any missing homework or to prepare ahead of time if they know they have special events planned when they won't have time to complete homework.

  • Reading for 20 more minutes or more every day.  Most students by third grade should be reading chapter books.  Summaries for the week should reflect their progression of the same book until completed.
    • Write the title of your book and brief summary (5 -6 sentences) connecting to what they read every night.  
      • Fiction
        • Where and when is the story taking place?
        • What is happening in the story?
        • Who is it happening to?
        • Why do you think it might be happening?
        • Make a prediction of what might happen next.  This is an important skill of good readers  The next day's summary should include id your prediction was or was not correct.
      • Non-fiction 
        • Write three interesting facts you learned.
        • Write a question you still have about the topic.
        • Practice your highlighted spelling words by writing each five times each every night

  • Spelling practice your highlighted spelling words by writing each five times each every night.
    • Once a week write a creative paragraph or story using ten or more words from that week's spelling list.  Make sure you circle the words in your writing.

  • Math targeted skill practice worksheets will be sent home as scheduled in the Bridges Math Program.  There is not a set number of pages each week.

  •  Again, a reminder that weekends are included to aid in the completion of weekly homework.  If family emergencies occur that prevent a completion of homework by Wednesday, please write a note in their Homework Composition Notebook to let me know.
